Mongolia in the Footsteps of the Nomads exhibition final days!

As many of you will know since Thursday last week I’ve been running my first ever exhibition In the Footsteps of the Nomads at the Matt Irwin gallery in Scott Alley, 239 Flinders Lane in Melbourne’s CBD. The exhibtion so far has been a great success with both an opening night special event and an official opening being attended to capacity.

The exhibition now has only two days to go! It is open today (Tues 28th Feb) until 6pm and will be tomorrow from midday to 6pm. You are also invited to attend our special encore closing night event tomorrow night starting at 6pm that will feature a traditional Mongolian dance performance (click here to RSVP).

The exhibition is free to enter, open to the public and all prints are for sale and printed on guaranteed archival quality ‘silver rag’ art print photo paper. Framing services can be provided on request.

All purchasers will receive a 10% discount if they like Cam Cope Photography on Facebook, an action that also has the scientifically proven health benefit of making you feel awesome.

About the Exhibition

In mid 2011 I was invited by my eldest brother, adventurer Tim Cope, and World Expeditions, to produce a series of photographs in a land that occupies a mythical place in our collective imagination.

As an emerging photographic artist and travel photographer, it was an incredible opportunity for fresh inspiration and to connect with people from a culture I had not yet experienced. It quickly became clear to me the Mongolian nomadic way of life was fundamentally different from our own. Their land is fence-free, their possessions few and the doors to their homes always open to strangers. Their philosophy seemed to be ‘don’t ask, just do’, allowing me an exceptional freedom to engage in people’s lives with my camera. Mongolia in the Footsteps of the Nomads is my debut exhibition and a photographic exploration of Mongolia’s remote far west and select locations in the Gobi Desert and Terelj National Park.

I am indebted to the nomads I met there for their warm hospitality and openness towards my craft. I believe this series of photographs captures a sense of the Mongolian way of life, their connection with their animals and the beauty of the land for which Mongolians show immense pride. I invite you to explore the images on the gallery walls and share in appreciating a unique land and culture.

Sustainable Living Festival 2012 Partnership

Recycled Origami "H-Arts" promoting the Sustainable Living Festival 2012

This week I am shooting a sustainability art project with the Sustainable Living Foundation to promote the amazing yearly Sustainable Living Festival in Melbourne. I’ve partnered with the festival to create a series of images that share the love for recycling, a cornerstone of sustainable living. Stay tuned for origami “h-arts” and some fun pictures, it is a new area of work for me in photography and I’m looking forward to experimenting with a few ideas. More pictures and possibly even animations coming over the next week.

Announcing Boorun’s Canoe and upcoming artist talk at the Melbourne Museum

Senior Gunaikurnai elder, Uncle Albert Mullett, guides grandchildren in making a traditional tree bark canoe.

It gives me great pleasure to formally announce Boorun’s Canoe, an indigenous cultural arts collaboration I’ve been working on part-time for the past 18 months with Indigenous artist Steaphan Paton, senior Gunaikurnai elder Uncle Albert Mullett, various members of the Gunaikurnai community and Bunjilaka, the Aboriginal Cultural Centre at the Melbourne Museum.

Together we developed Boorun’s Canoe to ensure the transfer of traditional canoe-building knowledge to young generations and promote the story of cultural revival. This project brings together vital elements of cultural pride, intergenerational knowledge, traditional practice and story accompanied by over 30 of my images.

Boorun’s Canoe has been selected to be the 2012 midyear exhibition at Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre, Melbourne Museum, opening NAIDOC week.

Next Week, From 1pm to 1.45pm on Friday (Feb 10) Steaphan and I will be giving an artist talk on the project, our inspiration and collaboration. At this talk I will also be projecting a short slideshow to preview the project.

The talk is at the Discovery Centre in the Melbourne Museum located in Carlton. If you can make it on your lunch break next Friday I’d love to see you there. For information on how to find the venue click here.

Cheers,

Cam.
